Barbara Jarman

Councillor with a responsiblity for the Recreation Ground and the village War Memorial

My mother’s family lived in Farnham and I spent much of my childhood years in the village. I married my husband in Farnham Church in 1967 and moved into the village in 1982. I have been a councillor for several years and actively involved in fund-raising in the village. I was a member of the Bluebell Ride Committee helping in this yearly event for up to 300 horses to ride around Farnham on public bridle paths and over private land (with kind permission of the landowners). I was a joint leader of the monthly village Coffee Morning held in the village hall which was extremely successful, raising a lot of money for village charities until its closure in 2022. Early on in my time as a councillor, I organised the repair of the cross on top of the War Memorial in the churchyard. It had been broken for several years. I was involved in a needlwork and sewing group that repaired and renewed part of the altar cloth for St Mary’s Church in the village; I was a governor at Farnham Primary School and have also spent nearly 10 years teaching part-time and supply at the school (1996-2005). I started up the Recreation Committee with the Clerk of the Parish Council and recruited some of the younger parents at the time to help re-design the Recreation Area and then raise money for new equipment. The group and village managed to raise £50,000 (mostly from successful applications for grants). I am still involved with the group and organise the yearly Christmas Carols around the Christmas Tree on Christmas Eve.
